How to speed up a slow Windows 11 computer

A slow computer is not always a computer that needs replacing. In Paris, I regularly see laptops and desktops that feel unusable, when the real issue is an old hard drive, too many startup apps, low free storage, or years of software clutter.

Typical warning signs

  • Boot time of several minutes
  • Apps freezing when you open more than a few windows
  • The fan running constantly for simple tasks
  • The machine only becoming usable long after startup

Checks you can do yourself

First, look at free storage space and review startup programs in Task Manager. Windows 11 needs breathing room. If the drive is almost full, performance usually drops fast.

Then check whether the computer still uses an old mechanical hard drive instead of an SSD. This is one of the most common causes of “suddenly old” performance. Moving to an SSD often transforms the machine completely.

When a software cleanup is enough

Sometimes the fix is straightforward: remove junk software, trim startup apps, update Windows properly, and make sure security tools are not conflicting with each other.

When you need a proper repair check

If it is still slow, the next step is to check drive health, RAM, system errors, drivers, and possible malware. That is where a real computer repair service in Paris becomes useful. If the issue is clearly Windows-related, my Windows PC repair page goes deeper into the usual causes.

The most cost-effective upgrade

On a computer that is a few years old, the best value fix is often a software cleanup plus an SSD upgrade if the hardware supports it. It costs far less than replacing the computer and can give you several more useful years.
