A failing hard drive or SSD is one of the most stressful situations in computing: photos, documents, accounts, everything can seem lost at once. The right first move greatly changes the odds of recovery.
Signs a drive is failing
- Unusual noises: clicking or grinding (mechanical drive).
- Files or folders that disappear or become unreadable.
- Computer freezing when opening certain files.
- An error at startup or a drive that is no longer recognised.
The golden rule: stop using the drive
At the first signs, stop writing to the drive and avoid powering it on repeatedly. Every attempt can worsen the failure and overwrite data that is still recoverable. Do not install recovery software onto the affected drive.
What is often recoverable
Accidental deletion, a quick format, a corrupted partition or a system that no longer boots usually leave the data intact on the media: it is reachable with the right tools. A severe mechanical failure is trickier, but often partly recoverable.
Backup: the best protection
Recovery always costs more than prevention. An automatic backup (external drive plus a cloud copy) avoids most disasters. The simple rule: three copies, two media, one off-site.
Calling a technician
If the data matters, a quick diagnosis estimates the chances before any risky handling. In Paris I offer data recovery (hard drive, SSD, USB stick) and computer repair, with a clear diagnosis and a quote before any work. Request a quote or call 07 66 84 52 57.
