My Mac will not start — what to do (Paris guide)

A Mac that will not start is stressful, especially when important files are on it. The good news: in many cases the problem is software-related and recoverable. Here are the checks to run before considering a repair.

1. Check the power

  • Use the original charger and let it charge for 15 minutes before testing.
  • Try another outlet and, if possible, another cable or adapter.
  • No charging light can point to a charger, charging-port or battery issue.

2. Black screen but the Mac seems on

Listen for the fan or the startup sound. If the Mac runs but the screen stays black, it is often the display or backlight. Turn brightness up on the keyboard just in case.

3. Reset SMC and NVRAM

On Intel Macs, resetting the SMC controller and NVRAM fixes many power and display hang-ups. On Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3), a full 30-second shutdown then restart plays an equivalent role.

4. Start in Safe Mode

Safe Mode loads macOS with the minimum of components and repairs some disk errors along the way. If it boots in Safe Mode but not normally, a piece of software or a login item is usually the cause.

5. Question mark or stuck bar

  • Folder with a question mark: the Mac cannot find a startup system, often a disk or macOS install to repair.
  • Stuck progress bar: an interrupted update or a struggling disk.

These usually go through macOS Recovery (Disk Utility, reinstall), without erasing your data when done properly.

When to call a technician

If the Mac still will not start, makes unusual noises, or important data is at stake, it is best not to push it: repeated attempts can worsen a failing disk. A diagnosis separates a software fault (often repairable and inexpensive) from a hardware fault.
